This year, the AIEOs have been working diligently to ensure that ASHS has an incredible NAIDOC Week for 2018. The theme for this year is “Because of Her We Can”, in which we proudly acknowledge the significant roles and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to the community at local, state and national levels. This year we recognise and celebrate their achievements. They are our mothers, grandmothers, elders, aunties, sisters, daughters and nieces. Their voice and their unwavering passion give us strength and determination to empower women Australia-wide.

The Kinjarling NAIDOC Schools Basketball Tournament is on again. This year the event will be held at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre, and we are pleased to advise that the North Albany Senior High School and the Mount Barker Community College are both entering teams in the competition.

We are thrilled to have local community agencies in Albany showcase their programs and activities at our Festival on Wednesday. Traditional owners and elders will attend our celebrations and share lunch and entertainment with the staff and students of ASHS.

Our NAIDOC Assembly will be held on Thursday and local elder, Eliza Woods, will open the ceremony with a traditional Welcome to Country. Carol Pettersen, a local and prominent elder in the community, will be our keynote speaker about what the NAIDOC theme means to her.
